July 2017 Goals + June Goal Recap

Hiiiiii, I'm baaaaack! Did you miss me, Internet Friends? It has certainly been weird not logging in here a few times each week to catch up with you all, but sometimes a break is nice.

I hope you'll catch me up on a little bit of what you've been up to these past few weeks in the comments! I've missed you!

^It turns out the intro to my May goals post is perfect for this month too.

June.Was. Rough.

The first few days were a total whirlwind as we adjusted to life post-honeymoon & I ran Ragnar. Then, when I was busy being outside & riding my bike, I fell off it and broke my hand, cracked a rib & busted my face. Cool. So, that brought my blogging and workouts to quite the halt. I feel like I totally dropped the ball on my goals at that point. This injury put me into a slump for sure. So, the theme of June was meh.

More outdoor workouts | Meh.
I was doing really great with this. In fact, I was outdoors, working out when I broke my hand. So, obviously this goal was going great. My workouts in general have suffered post fall, and have mostly been indoors. I've been using the spin bike, the weights, and the treadmill. But have even been inconsistent with that. It's hard to motivate myself to get up early to walk slowly on the treadmill for 45 minutes.

More outdoor time | Tan line game strong.
I may not be working out, but you best believe I am enjoying adult beverages on the back porch. Mr. Sass and I have eaten many dinners outside, and grilled as many of them as we can. I proved my love for Aldi knows no bounds & bought a kiddie pool there recently for $20. We finally blew it up & filled it up & the MacMod Community Pool is now accepting applications for new members.

Portion Control + MFP | Hit or Miss
Like some days I dutifully tracked things in My Fitness Pal, and felt well nourished & then some days I had pizza & cookies for lunch, followed by Chipotle for dinner. I'm not sure if that's a shining example of balance, or my general lack of self control...

Bust out thank you notes | Hard with only one hand...
I was crushing this goal. Honestly, it was really working out to my benefit too. Mr. Sass hates writing thank you notes, I hate cleaning the house, so we traded. Until I broke my dominant hand. There are 16 left to write, which isn't a lot, but also isn't none. And many still to address. He's graciously addressed some, but this is still hanging over our heads until I either bust out of this brace or become a bit more ambidextrous.

Start TRI training |  I fell off the wagon - literally.
Too soon for the joke? Nah. I was getting a feel for running & biking post honeymoon, until I literally fell off my bike. I've been on the spin bike a time or two, but haven't yet been able to run post fall, which I believe is due to a cracked rib, also from said fall. I speed walked a 5K for the 4th (like 13:52 // mile average sat whatttt!?) so I plan to try running again in the next few days, so at least I'll have that I guess.

July goals...I'm really not sure where to start, it seems like many of my June goals, which I had planned to continue through the summer were cut short, by - YOU GUESSED IT, my broken hand! I'll be stuck in this thing until July 21st - ish.

85,000 steps weekly | I really fell off my step game in June - and if I want to make it to 4M by year end, I gotta pull it together. This goal should also force me outside for more walks. I can only roam the halls of the office so many times before people start to notice.

More outdoor time | Ain't nothin' gonna stop me from reading books on the back porch, or drinking margaritas in the pool.

Start (modified) TRI training | Honestly, while I plan to try running again tomorrow to see if I can do so pain free, I don't know when I'll be able to run. I have plans to get my bike fixed this week. But in the meantime, it's the spin bike, some walking, and no swimming for me. How's that for some sad tri- training. I'm trying not to wallow, and just make this tri my comeback to racing!

Waste no food | If you caught my mini meal prep on IG, then you know we're skipping the grocery store this week. We have tons of odds and ends around, and while we won't be eating our favorite meals, we'll do well to clean out the cabinets, fridge & freezer. We have plenty of fresh & frozen veggies to last us the week, but we'll definitely be a little short on fresh fruit come Saturday, but no one will die of scurvy. I want to continue being mindful in my shopping to make sure we're using up bits from last week before I go buying more food for the next week. Or figure out a way to freeze // use. Especially as our garden starts to produce!

Make a budget | Wait, what? The budget queen over here doesn't have a budget? Honestly, the past 2-3 years of my "single" life. I was on auto-pilot. I got to a place where I wasn't wasting money on things I didn't need, and months where I went over certain categories like restaurants were expenses I felt were worthwhile because I was enjoying time with friends. But now that the Sass house has combined budgetary forces, we need a budget. Honestly, our rough goal is to put 25% of our monthly income towards the mortgage, 25% towards saving for a down payment on a new house, 25% into savings // stock market, and the final 25% for living expenses. We think it sounds bold, but that it's totally doable. But, we need to officially run the numbers on expenses, while I have a great grasp on our grocery spending, I am pretty much clueless about what our normal electric bill is.

What are your July goals?
What do you do when you're injured to stay active?
What's your favorite flavor of margarita?

    1. UGH - for sure. Especially since not working out has translated into some poor sleep for me as well! I just have so much energy!

    1. Thank you - definitely not my preferred bone to break, but I guess no bones are good ones to break...

  3. No shame in investing in an inflatable pool. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do!

Wasting less food was a major goal of mine for this year, and meal planning (plus moving and getting a fresh start on the pantry, I admit!) has been a game changer in big ways I didn't expect. Good luck!

Hoping for a speedy hand recovery for ya!

    1. Yesss - my husband definitely has some things in the pantry I would NEVER buy for us...so we'll see if I can find out how to use those things up.

  4. So proud of you & your budgeting goals. So smart to do it young & fresh in a new marriage.
Bless your heart with your fall. That just looks like it hurts.
I always am a big fan of the kid pool for adult life.

    1. So far it's been a fantastic purchase. Can't wait for some more sunny weather so I can read a book in there. Or the perfect place to cool down post run.

  5. Sorry about your hand, especially because it sounds like you were really on a roll with your goals before the fall. I hope things get better in July! And that inflatable pool is a great find, I'm going to have to look for something like that :)

    1. Definitely! I know I've seen them pretty much everywhere. Ours is 10ft long, which is pretty big considering all we plan to do is SIT in it, I bet Walgreens or Walmart would have them!

  6. I'm so sorry to hear about your month! I think it wasn't the best for a lot of us. But I feel especially bad that yours included physical injury as a set back to your goals. I hope things are steadily getting easier for you and that you are healing well! I remember breaking my foot in college really de-railed my workouts and things at that time. I never got quite on track.. but my workouts were not my hobbies either. So there you go. It sounds like you are making the best of everything with your mini pool, tanning, and goals to spend time outside. Good luck with everything! XO - Alexandra

    1. I'm definitely trying! I ran today which went well, which I think will help the last few weeks of this brace fly by since I'll be able to get my heart pumping again.

  7. i'm pretty sure you get a pass on your goals when you fall off your bike and hurt yourself that bad :( you poor thing. i need to check out my local aldi for that pool. no shame! i am the worst at using odds and ends, i like to keep my pantry and such stocked, so i feel like i always have odds and ends.. but of course that does mean wasted food sometimes. very cool that you're doing that!
i am very lucky that i've never had a serious injury - normally it's something that will stop me doing one thing but not another, so i'm never down for long. i hope july 21st comes quickly for you!
i am not a margarita fan because i hate hate hate tequila, but i went to a mexican restaurant in sydney with 2 blogging pals and had a mango one and a strawberry one - the mango was delicious!

    1. UGH - I hate keeping a stocked pantry because I feel like I just keep buying more stuff & never use what I have. So I try to only buy what we need, or just keep a few emergency rations on hand and buy more when we run through those.

Mango margaritas are a favorite of mine for sure, but it also helps that I like tequila, or really, I like it in margaritas!

  9. Ok I am totally up for that kind of outdoor time ;) Or going for a hike if you're up for it! I also need to use up all the weird odds and ends because our cabinets are PACKED.

    1. Definitely up for hiking!

You should do a no shop week! Especially since you're getting a CSA right now, or make one meal each week totally from your pantry 'til you suck down those odds & ends.

  10. You are the goal queen - so many of these are great goals. I absolutely love dining al fresco; most of the time, that's where you'll find me. Aldi has pools? Whoa - love just went to a whole new level.

    1. Every time I THINK I'll need to make a trip somewhere else Aldi comes through with exactly what I need.

If they would carry fresh herbs at my store I'd pretty much never go anywhere else.

  11. You really need to stop talking about Aldi in front of me or I am going to scream... we need a store opening over here ASAP! ;)

Your budget goals sound indeed bold (I dont' think we could live of 25% of our income), but good for you for figuring out your priorities. Can't wait to hear more!

    1. I don't think we could do it if we didn't give the mortgage it's own 25%. I also have to say I think pretty much EVERYTHING here in PA is cheaper than in CA. Groceries & gas especially. And we like to hike, which is free. So, we're inexpensive livers by nature (Ha - pun not intended!)
