Currently : August 2016

It's August. Which is freaking me out. Which sounds cliche, and it might be, but it's true. I don't know if my "old age" is making time speed up, or if it's the busy weekends & plans with friends, but this year is absolutely flying by, and it won't slow down because I've got more planned for the next few months than I did for the months past.

A new month around here means a new "episode" of currently, where I link up with Anne to talk about the little things in life. The ones that might not make the blog cut otherwise.

hearting // I've been digging trail running. Despite having 3 marathons + 8 half marathons under my belt, trail running is still a very real challenge. You've got to pay attention to blazes, and roots and rocks, and all sorts of other things. Pace goals fly by the wayside. It's quiet, there's not a lot of people in the woods.

watching // Orange is the New Black. When I first started watching the most recent season it just didn't grab me. I could stop after one episode, and I would go a few days between them, using my time to enjoy the weather instead. But now I'm nearing the end of the season & shit is getting real. Can't stop. Won't stop.

exploring // If you missed it, I posted earlier this week about my weekend getaway, a great day trip the BF & I took to get out of the city and explore somewhere new for the day. Two wineries, 2 new to me hikes + one of my favorite restaurants. What's not to love?

creating //  A date night idea list. Sometimes it's nice to not have to make decisions and plan things. I make decisions all day at work. I come home where I decide what's for dinner. So sometimes, when it comes to date night, I would love for the BF to plan something, with zero input from me, and just surprise me. He's afraid of screwing it up and is usually plagued by indecision. The meet in the middle solution was a big list of date nights. Some require pre-planning, some are seasonal, some are free, some are expensive, most are somewhere in the middle. All he has to do to "plan" something (and vis versa) is take a peek at the list & find a night that works for us both.

eating // Fresh garden produce. Cucumbers and tomatoes and zucchini, oh my! Pickle-mania is real over here, the zucchini and squash are thriving, the tomatoes are starting to ripen, and being able to pick fresh basil? Mmm.

Take a peek at the homegrown lunch the BF made us on Saturday. Zucchini, tomatoes, garlic, basil and chicken, all over some penne pasta. The chicken and the pasta were the only two things we didn't grow ourselves!

What's your favorite date night?
Interested in seeing our list once it's a little more complete?

  1. My date nights are honestly so boring and usually just involve watching a movie. We actually prefer day dates of exploring new places/restaurants. I'm trying to get us to go to a butterfly sanctuary before the summer is over. But I'd love to see the list whenever you're done. And that dinner looks totally drool-worthy. Fresh basil is the freakin best.

    1. I'll definitely post the list when I'm finished.

I'm definitely starting to love Day Dates too. Just seems like more things are open during the day to explore - plus I'd rather eat lunch somewhere versus waiting around for a table for 2 hours for dinner.

  2. Hooray for date nights and summer veggies! My husband and I like to eat out on date nights, so we're always on the look out for new places to try.

    1. We were all about trying new places for a while, but we had a string of not so great experiences at new places, so we reverted back to our favorites for a while, may be time to branch out again.

  3. Yay for date nights, trail runs, veggies, and OITNB. I just started that show and wow, it hooked me right in. Our favorite date night has been going and getting really nice steaks and grilling them at home, but going out for drinks. Have a great day!

    1. That sounds like a great date night! I suggested something similar, like going out for appetizers or dessert. Sounds a little disjointed, but seems like dessert would be easy!

  4. One of our favorite date nights is a local brewery that we like to walk to. Or there's this SUPER cute town 30 minutes from us- Galena, Illinois. It's as if it's right out of a movie or something, it's adorable. We love just going in the shops and walking around. And omg I'm so jealous that you grow your own zucchini. I'm obsesseddddd with it and have been buying it like crazy from the farmer's market.

    1. If I thought I could mail you zucchini I would. We are literally swimming in it. Zucchini bread, zucchini fritters, sliced zucchini, grilled zucchini, fried zucchini. It doesn't end!

I love trying new beers, ciders, wines, etc. So, I'll have to find all the nearby ones & add them to the list!

  5. I hate gardening... but love when all my garden friends share - its the best yummies. I just cant handle the taking care of it. I'm so allergic to grass.

I need to try & finish Orange... I never made it through season 1

    1. I'll be real honest, the BF does most of the work, and I reap most of the rewards. ;) But he enjoys it. It's definitely allergy central. He tosses his grass clippings into a new compost pile he started, but you'd be sneezing in a second!

  6. Look at all those veggies on that pasta! It looks so pretty and delicious as well. I gave up on gardening after it seemed like critters ate all the veggies. I really like the date night list idea.

    1. We have a pretty big fence around ours - and a lot of mouse traps since there were mice EVERYWHERE somehow. For the most part we've come away unscathed. So maybe the animals don't know the garden is there. The memo isn't out yet.

    1. It would definitely look good either way, I just ate lunch, but looked at the picture again & now I'm hungry.

  8. Haha, I used to do the same thing for date nights! Usually I'm the planner but I wanted to be surprised sometimes too. I hope this method works for you guys! I was pretty "meh" about the beginning of this season's OITNB but I powered through it because I detest spoilers. And kudos for all that fresh produce- taht dish sounds amazing!

    1. Somehow NO ONE spoiled it for me - which I much appreciated.

Being surprised is so nice & special, hopefully once I finish my list, I can post & give everyone out there a few ideas!

  9. Yes, we've decided that "old age" does make time speed up - a year is a smaller and smaller portion of your total life than it used to be, and it just makes it seem shorter and shorter! Love the idea of creating a date night list! Our very favorite is actually not date NIGHT - but going out for breakfast. Otherwise our go-to is a bike ride followed by takeout :) And I'm intrigued by trail running - I think I need to give it a try!

    1. A bike ride + takeout sounds great. So simple, but some how we've never come up with that.

I love trying new breakfast places too, especially since I tend to be an early riser, we can make it to a place before there is a wait to be seated!

  10. I miss trail running, so much fun! Good call, I need to get back into it! And I need to catch up on OITNB...! That pasta looks amazeballs!!

    1. I love hiking, and running, so loving trail running makes a lot of sense for me.

As for OITNB, give it a few episodes, this season started off pretty slow for me.

  12. Dan and I are awful about date night. It will be months without a "date", but since we live together it feels like every day together is a date. I want to hear your suggestions though..particularly for things in Pittsburgh!

    1. So far my list is turning out to be lots of Pittsburgh specific things, mostly because the BF panics without SPECIFIC suggestions. So, I'm trying to help as much as I can, I'll definitely share with you all!

  13. Oh those veggies! :) I would love to have a garden, but we have an apartment, are never home, and I have a black thumb! :P hehe That looks amazing. Cucumber Tomato salads are my favorite! Date nights are really hard! One night I knew he wanted to watch Marvel movies, and they aren't always my thing, but I thought I would surprise him by renting some, and making him a little story about why he was MARVEL-ous... and having snacks. Sadly the movies backfired a little, but we still had fun. I want to do more thought out date nights. We often end up seeing an older movie at a local theatre, binge watching Netflix, etc. nothing very exciting. We try hard to plan events out sometimes so we have something more planned to look forward to. We go to a lot of concerts. :) XO - Alexandra

    1. We're mostly just bad about sticking with a routine. Come home from work, make dinner, eat dinner, have a drink on the porch, watch a show on Netflix, go to bed. Even on weekends we have a propensity to hike in the same spots.

So, while I crave routine sometimes, I'm trying to snap us out of it occasionally.

  14. Love the idea of creating a list of date nights to choose from--I too am always waiting for the husband to plan a date night and this seems like it would make things so much easier. Also that salad looks amazing!

    1. I didn't think about how hard it may be to plan from his point of view, so I'm hoping this makes things easy peasy for both of us!

  15. He may not be planning date night but he is for sure making delish dinners and has a serious green thumb! I too wish the husband would plan a night out - alas it's left to the ladies!

I love these posts - it's a great idea to do them once a month to remember what's going on - I should try this! I just caught up on past posts . . . I'm impressed with all the hikes - we need more of that in our life!!! And goal setting . . . excellent idea but I just never seem to do them outside of new years! You go girl!

    1. He really does. I'm a good cook, but he does it all, and I will never turn down a garden fresh meal that I don't have to cook!

I love setting big goal at the beginning of the year, but I find it's so easy if you don't have small baby step goals to get to the end of the year no closer to your goal than when you started.

  16. Your date night idea sounds lovely! I'm always the one choosing what we do as Jesse is horrribbbleeeee at making decisions! We even have a date night jar but he'll pick one out and go "hmm...." pick another and then spend ours choosing out of the two haha!

    1. I did the exact same thing. This season seems to focus on different inmates more, and leaves some of the ones I had come to love in past seasons. Took 'til maybe episode 5 to get into?
